Masc/Femme ‘Weaving’ EP Release Show: Friday, 13 November at Geihinkan Karaoke and Live Music Bar, with Welcomer and From Jeniffer

We confirmed the title of Masc/Femme’s debut EP, Weaving, last night at Whammy Public Bar.

Sat in the courtyard after finishing the soundcheck for HIRIs Public Service set, we whacked out the desperately overdue admin work to get this EP release off the ground. Maybe the title reflects the absurd amount of intertwining inconveniences the band has gone through over the past few months that have forced us to leave it this late. It could also mirror the variety of perspectives across these three tracks, with songwriters Dane Yang, Geo Boentaran, and Lam Jey Min trading instruments and microphones for individual examples of their songwriting abilities.

I think collaboration, and bringing things together, is at the core of Masc/Femme. Accompanied by Trey Kumara on bass, the band bring forth perspectives on life and music from across the world, culminating in an indie rock/shoegaze sound adequately drenched in pedals and sung with desperation, anger, and hope.

Weaving was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Alex Beattie in September of 2026, bringing his stamp across Auckland alternative music to Masc/Femme in a two-day recording session that, given that the band also balances three incredible songwriters, make my comparisons between them and The Beatles difficult to suppress.

The EP brings together three tracks from their live set - ‘Feel’, ‘Nightlights (tentative)’, and ‘K9’, which only scratch at the surface of what Masc/Femme has to offer. The guttural screams, crooning, and gang vocals spell out a body of work I’m incredibly proud of.

To celebrate the release of Weaving, Masc/Femme are headlining Geihinkan next Friday, the 13th of November for an intimate celebration of the year we’ve had ahead of a break this summer.

Joining them are Welcomer, the Wellington emo-folk band represented by Miles Sutton for a one-off Tāmaki solo performance, and From Jeniffer, the solo project of Grapehouse lead Jen Fetesio.

For the first time, tickets are available on our website at misheard.co.nz/products/masc-femme-ep-release-show-13-nov-geihinkan. This is an adaptation after the gutting loss of UnderTheRadars ticketing services - please show your email receipt at the door, or grab one there before the room fills up.
